……………………………..
(translation by Gia-fu Feng and Jane English)
thanks to http://www.wussu.com/laotzu/index.htm

The consciousness of the happenings of one’s body is his mind. When he or she is aware of the particulars of his body: thoughts, cognition, feelings, perceptions, reactions – He calls this awareness his mind.

In Taoism and Zen, meditating is a holistic practice of consciously Letting Things Flow.
(“a thousand”) Things come and go in the moment. If one is being mindful of things coming and going in the moment, without attempting to capture or control, suppress or force… Then his mind is resting at peace.
I have read many times the words “Let things go” during meditation. Its difficult to find the perfect description in contemporary English. What is really being let go of .. is the clinging and coercing that we usually do of things that come to mind. What I really do is “Let things Flow“.

Things are Happenings.
They rise and fall like a figure from a ground of some moving painting or work- of- art. No figure is ever truly separated from the ground. The ground is Nature happening or the” Tao”. Things rise and fall, they exist in consciousness as a singularity of two (like figure & ground; word & context; matter & space) but the Tao is constant. The Tao flows, but is always here.

from the words of Lao Tzu the supposed author of the Tao Te Ching:
Being divine is harmonizing with the flowing nature.
“And though the body dies, the Tao is Eternal.”

I made a web poster for a friend:

“I do my thing, you do your thing“
(click on the poster for full size)

The words are a poem by Fritz Perls and they are usually titled the “Gestalt Prayer“. Its not really a prayer, other than being a statement of affirmation. The poem could have been titled the “Gestalt Mantra” or “Gestalt Chant”.

What Perls wished to affirm, I believe, is the spirit of independence and relative self reliance, that… with the concepts of personal growth, sustainability and responsibility, are at the core of his Gestalt Therapy Theory.
-An existential phenomenology .

The Gestalt Prayer can be found in the work “Gestalt Therapy Verbatim” by F. Perls. The photo is mine… for some reason I like to photograph bees. I hope you find it to be a cool affirmation poster.
Thanks to Fritz and Laura Perls and the rest of the “gestalts” for there inspiring words.

Would you like to improve your listening and conversation skills?
Try working in a response or two starting with the following:

What I hear you saying is…

Sounds like….

You’re feeling….

You think…

From your perspective…..

What I’m hearing is that your saying...

It sounds like you value…

Could this be….

By that you mean…

It sounds like on one hand you feel_____ because you think______ and
on the other hand you feel_______ because you think________.

Good listening is like data collecting. One lets go of bias and preconceptions, and refrain from making judgements and opinions. Responding, is clarifying and confirming he/she is listening to what someone is saying to him.

To probe further into another is saying, try one of the following:

I’m wondering…

what you mean by…

what that means to you.

what have you thought of doing…

What have you tried before?

How do you usually make this kind of decision?

What would you like to see happen?

What do you think the consequences would be?

what scares you about…

Some years ago I took a class in “Active and Reflective Listening” for volunteer work I was doing at the time. I use those skills, including the statements above all the time, today — they are part of my way of conversing. I am a much better listener today.
If use some of these in your conversations and you can if you can be a better listener.

“In a beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, in a master’s mind there are few“

- unknown

With expertise, one gains preconceived ideas on the How-To when preforming regular or familiar routine tasks. Reminded by his experienced, he knows what to do; and what not do pertaining to his task. He gets daily tasks done.
I’ve use this approach with work:

“do what works”.

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”

These have been good axioms for production and manufacturing. They have served me well.

But now I think about the first time I approached a new problem, new job , hobby ,or new way of thinking: The first time I learned how used the computer, learned blogging, wrote a poem, did the laundry, gardened, When I approached something new., I had less bias toward the new experience , and more excitement then approaching routine tasks…
Spontaneity freshness instead of repetition and stagnation. I was a beginner.

One develops methods, but he can get boxed in by his patterns. If I “do what works” and stick with the same process, I get the job done, but I never see outside the system. Repetition is a rythm, but it does get dull and boring. Its more fun to learn something new. there are many possibilities.

“If you discriminate too much, you limit yourself, If you are too demanding, or too greedy,
your mind is not rich and self-sufficient . If we lose our origional self sufficient minds, we will lose all precepts. [...] If you keep your origional mind, the precepts will keep themselves.“

–Shunryu,Suzuki “Zen Mind, Beginners Mind”

“The real secrets of the arts: always be a beginner“

As Shunryu Suzuki implies, when approaching meditation, approach with a “Beginners mind“. Approach each experience, as if it were fresh and new. This is applicable to the creative process, Forget what you’ve learned before, and let go of any biases and preconceptions.

So here is the new year, I would like to approach this year with a “beginner’s mind”, to break out of the old routines and old systems. Shoshin. Many possibilities. I will approach this new year with my beginners mind.

Happy new year!

Look upon other people and see that we are all humans. We roughly appear to have the same forms and physics, the same sets of uniquely human behaviors ( such as use of language). Upon deeper inspection, by biologists who study DNA, There are traits and characteristics that are universally Homo Sapien or human.
Meet and talk with other people and discover that people have cognitive differences of each person; Travel and note the cultural differences of people.
If you are one who has used medications and therapies for serious health problems, you will quickly learn the unwritten rule : “what works for one may not work for another, everyone is different“. One can infer each Homo Sapien is biologically different from the next, Same goes for their sum total of subjective experiences. The individual has characteristics that are unique.

I am pretty sure that a universal model does not apply when talking about all people, most of the time. But we also, in talking about the human race per se , or groups… education ,communication or interactions ..need to talk about more than just the individual. I certainly want to know more than the individual that is me.

Self and Other, Person to Person

As I am a subject of my own permeated world that I participate in, other persons are the subject of their own. As subjects we have considerable influence upon the world. a subject acts upon other things. In the shared circumstance, such as that of a conversation, or any other interpersonal experience, Each must treat the “other” as a subject of overlapping or joined existence– an intersubjective circumstance. Intersubjectivity.

“On the hand, a we appreciate, as it were, [another persons] otherness, and on the other hand we appreciate the humanness we have in common“

-Brighter Side of Human Nature. Alfie Kohn chapter titled The Self and Other…
Kohn goes on the explain intersubjectivity in a meeting (conversation, circumstance, Dasein etc) . After the two fold contrast of Self and Other arises; and two subjects recognize an intersubjective meeting, A twofold attitude with the contrasting of sameness and difference arises. This not a state between sameness and difference, according to Kohn, rather a “dynamic tension of the two”.

“One who appreciates both dimensions of otherness and common humanness is able to appreciate a given individuals subjectivity [...] a subject is an actor, a knower, a center of experience and while two individuals share these features each is also a different subject.“

I would postulate that one is often comforted in the sameness beyond humanness in a intersubjective moment. A subject maybe comforted in the sameness of culture, age, gender, ethnicity, ideology. Perhaps, for better or for worse, the Sameness we find in other people confirms ones own identity.
We are at the same time excited by the novelty of otherness, sometimes startled sometimes curious. If If man is to reach beyond his own hands grasp , it could be said one seeks out otherness beyond himself. In interpersonal relationships, we very often find another person’s Otherness, including the persons individual experiences and circumstances, compelling or alluring.

Beyond Objectification

Many Neuroscientists believe that they have located “Mirror neurons” in the human brain. These neurons are believed to active when we observe other people actions. In certain developmental stages (the experts argue the exact ages) one learns by observing others, an interpersonal action.

The understanding  that: other people  that one contacts (meets and interacts with) in his/her  own experiences,  have  similar  experiences  of their own, more than any stone, tree , structure or object;
and that they impact and influence as subjects within their own experiences… this is understanding takes a practical leap of faith.
But this understanding, which requires assumptions supported by a subjects growing experiences, lifts one beyond dull solipsism and egoism , to the richness of an intersubjective matrix, which is our human world.

Modern Physics may suggest a “subject:object” or “I:it” outlook as impractical. All things have influence on all other things in a field, whether the affect is grand or arbitrary. Any subject acting on a body, whether a stone, tree, another person, earth, sun, is influenced by the other in return. Objects are not static or inert.
For the purpose of interpersonal subject:subject or intersubjective relationship We may as, Martin Bubers suggest, choose “I:thou” interpretation over “I:it” .

The Brighter Side

The rich understanding of other people in their Dasein beyond ones own existence is one thing and Learning from others another. We also have to live with each other in space and our societies. If I am ” to treat others in the manner I wish to be treated“, Wouldn’t I have to know what is it like to be in another circumstance?

I am Reading Alfie Kohn’s ” The Brighter side of Human Nature“. Which postulates an individual’s existence is ideally positioned somewhere between the poles of Egoism and Altruism, and the motivations of an individual lies somewhere between self-interest and pro-social selflessness.
He writes about the importance of “Perspective taking” including Empathy (or feeling into)
three types of perspective taking:

Spatial and perceptive: imagining what its like to be in someone else’s physical circumstance.

Cognitive: imaging how another people think and feels from there perspective including strengths, limitations

Empathetic: Being affected by another’s circumstance.

Perspective taking is understanding another’s perspective, while Empathy is “feeling into”, or being affected by another persons perspective or circumstance. In quoting by Robert Salmon Perspective taking and Empathy…”Are form[s] of social cognition intermediate between logical or moral thought “

Cohn synthesizes the work of scientist(including doctors , biologists) , psychologist, educators, and philosophers and the book is heavily annotated. Cohen further illustrates the importance of understanding intersubectivity in interpersonal relationships, to promote the pro- social(or altruistic) and motivations and actions of individuals. He makes a strong case for an the Altruistic interests of the individual beyond self interest. I would recommend the book for all, but especially humanists, individualists and existentialists.

To be a subject in Existence is moral participation. To act upon and with others requires Dignity, Reciprocity, and Tolerance, (Ethics) in addition to subjects self -interests and mutual interests with others.

If you listen carefully as you read this post, you will notice a faintly audible whisper of the the words you are reading. It may be the same whisper you use to think in the symbols and code of language. It maybe an on going monologue or diaogue one has with his or herself, or narrative of scenes played out inside ones head. This overall process is dubbed “inner speech“, “inner monologue“, “inner dialogue” or Subvocalization, depending on what you read. Subvocalization is term usually used in the context of reading. However, because of the active verb subvocalizing, or to subvocalize, I prefer to use it here.
To subvocalize is more specific than to think, as one can “visualize” , “Be mindful“, feel, or even speed read while thinking without that low audible whisper of language. Subvocalization is thinking in Language, the way one would hear or speak it.

The following are a few difficulties with subvocal thinking. This is my speculation based upon my experience. I am not a doctor. If your thinking is causing you serious health or life problems consult a doctor or health care professional.

Subvocalizing and “Thinking Errors”.

One suggestion in neuroscience is that one side of ones brain creates emotional responses while the other side of ones brain uses the inner dialogue to rationalize the emotion.
Perhaps Affects (mood and emotion) influence on the process of subvocalizing is what produces “cognitive distortions” or “Thinking Errors” aka “Thought Errors“).
These “errors” maybe life- intrusive and/or self defeating, and are particular problem for people with Mental disorders (like me), and require a person to cope, and pay special attention to their inner dialogue. People who suffer from long term Depression , for example will usually “hear” a excessive negative or self defeating subvocal thinking.

“Loud” or “Fast” Subvocalizing.

For some people, especially diagnosed with mental disorders, subvocalizing can seem “louder” than sensory intake . For me in the past, my attention span was consumed by inner thoughts, as if my thinking was so loud, that I had trouble keeping my attention span on the outside world. I have described this as being unable to focus, feeling lost in thought. very frustrating.

For Some with mood disorders, when their mood is elevated their subvocalization seems faster than normal. Faster than normal subvocalization is usually called as “racing thoughts”. For those people experiencing “racing thoughts” , they may have a sense of higher creativity or productivity, real or false. Consequentially the speedy subvocalizing leads to fatigue and unstable moods, irrational thinking, or worse: the delusional thinking of psychosis .

Intrusive thinking

Sometimes subvocalization can seem hostile to the person experiencing them: such as the case with “intrusive thinking”.
Some people can be overwhelmed with the very intrusive Thoughts of self harm, or harming others, that are repeatedly subvocalized … “round and round in ones head”. Ironically the subject matter of this inner monologue or narrative is NOT the intent of the person — instead it is very scary experience!
Intrusive thoughts are unwanted. Intrusive thoughts are not delusions. Instead they are pressing, unwanted unreasonable thoughts and fears that are repetitious. After time they can develop into obsessions. Intrusive thoughts are consciously rejected and uncomfortable, but extremely hard to get rid of for some people.

An example: A women suffering from “intrusive thinking” (perhaps symtoms associated with postpardom OCD, in this example), could have the constant thought (subvocalization) of harming her child. But it is not the true intension of the mother, usually its the opposite: the scariness thing her mind could conjure. Instead the repeating thought terrifies the young mother. Doctors and professionals associated Intrusive thinking with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety Disorder and ADHD, but they can be a symptom with other diagnosis.

Its a possibility that, in the case of someone experiencing intrusive thinking, that this particular inner thought pattern is a behavior that is doing something else for the body: perhaps drumming up Alert/anxiety centers for the body to be in a state of readiness. Being in a state of readiness and alertness may have helped early humans survive in their evolution. who knows… this notion is hard to prove. In any case, the problem is that in today’s world this thought pattern is scary and unwanted.
Often people suffering with intrusive thinking willh believe they are evil or bad.. not realizing that, this is a process of the mind, somehow drumming up their most fearful thoughts…possibly to protect themselves. Ironic.

Noting the problems with an unhealthy subvocalizing process , I think it is important to disambiguate subvocalizing from the generic term “thinking” for the purpose of this conversation.
here is why:

Subvocalization uses language while other cognitive process do not.

I am able to cognate (interpret, process and feel emotion) without relying on subvocalization all the time.

I am able to be mindful ( filling ones attention span) of mental formations other than subvocalizing with language, by just observing, visualizing or meditating.

I am able to “quiet” subvocalization especially with meditation or medication.

subvocalizing appears to be, in my phenomenological experience, to be an activity such as walking or talking.

These are important points because it helping me understand the following:
subvocalizing is not the whole of my thinking, and it does not have to control the whole me or my thinking.
When Someone says I am not my thoughts… this is what they are talking about: the chattering and for some consuming “subvocalization” process or inner speech. Subvocalization is part of me, part of my cognation or thinking processes, but not the whole of me. The process is very useful in daily life, but comes with consequences.

– As with “Loud Subvocalization” ” Racing thoughts”, “Thinking Errors”, and “Intrusive thinking” The inner dialogue and subvocalizing can as destructive as they are anything else . Learning to understand and control the inner dialogue may be important in managing Mental Wellness.

Ways to reduce intrusiveness of Subvocalization:

If one is experiencing what he or she thinks are Intrusive thoughts, Thinking errors, Depression Mania, or any uncomfortable problems with your thinking — Its more than a good idea to Talk to your doctor or health-care provider. Doctors are able to prescribe treatment or medication that can help one manage health problems quickly — Yes these are real health problems.– Doctors and professionals are the only ones who diagnose a person with a disorder if needed.

Breathing Exercises and Meditation are excellent ways to learn to let go of subvocalization and be more mindful of other things.

A breathing and/or counting exercise can be a good plan to slow down or control an episode of negative, intrusive, or obsessive thoughts when an episode arises.

Positive Self Talk. When becoming aware of of a negative, intrusive or racing train of thought: verbalize “STOP!” or “I AM SAFE”, followed by verbalizing positive affirmations. learning to replace negative thoughts with positive ones take time, but is helpful.

Journaling – writing has been a way for to let go of thoughts that seem to go round in my head. I am not sure why it is helpful. perhaps the physical act of writing what is on my mind expels the energy of it all. Or perhaps it gives me a way to clarify my thoughts.

As far I can tell, our inner speech or subvocalization is not such a bad thing, much of the time, nor should it be.
Our use of language, thinking in language and speech helps us read, clarify our ideas, explore ideas more deeply, use rational problem solving, and communicate with other people. But it is important to realize that it is not the whole of my thinking, or the whole of me. And for those of us who suffer with excessive, negative, or intrusive subvocalizing, better understanding these process can make us happier and allow are thinking to be more useful tool and component for the whole of ourselves.
